why we don't choose to use

Animal-derived ingredients (i.e.: Carmine, Beeswax, Lanolin)

We choose to formulate without any animal derived ingredients.

Beeswax

Beeswax comes from animals and we choose not to formulate with any animal-derived ingredients.

Carmine

Carmine comes from animals and we choose not to formulate with any animal-derived ingredients.

Chemical sunscreens (i.e.: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Oxybenzone)

Chemicals in sunscreens are made by our friends in a lab. Some are being linked to hormone disruptors and reports are coming out about potential harm to the environment. We choose not to use them and instead offer a mineral based sunscreen.

EDTA

EDTA is a chelating agent that is made by our friends in the lab. We choose not to use it because of its connection to negative environmental impacts on our waterways.

Formaldehyde releasing ingredients

Formaldehyde releasing agents are by products of specific ingredients. We choose not to use ingredients that release them because it might be connected to cancer and inflammation.

Heavy Metals (unless unavoidable during manufacturing and it meets US FDA, California Prop 65 & Health Canada permitted levels)

We choose not to use heavy metals because build up over time may be connected to contamination in the body and the environment as well as other negative effects.

Honey

Honey comes from animals and we choose not to formulate with any animal-derived ingredients.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use it because we think this should be left to physicians to prescribe, when needed.

Lanolin

Lanolin comes from animals and we choose not to formulate with any animal-derived ingredients.

Methoxyethanol or Methyl Cellosove

Methoxyethanol or Methyl Cellosove is a solvent and additive. We choose not to use it because it may cause skin irritation.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Methylchloroisothiazolinone is a preservative made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use it because it may be linked to causing skin irritation.

Methylisothuazolinone

Methylisothuazolinone is a preservative made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use it because it may be linked to causing skin irritation.

Mineral Oil

We choose not use mineral oil because it is petroleum derived.

Nanomaterials / Nanoparticles

We choose not use nanoparticles because in large doses, they may harm living cells and organs. Insoluble nanoparticles that penetrate the skin may be linked to have negative effects on the body.

Palm Oil (unless sustainable & certified)

Palm oil is a natural, highly useful ingredient. We choose not use it unless it is sustainable and certified because if not, it may be destructive to our planet.

Parabens

Parabens are made by our friends in the lab. We choose not use them because they can penetrate deeply and may disrupt normal functioning hormones.

Paraffin

Paraffins are a white or colorless soft solid, or a wax and are derived from processed petroleum.

Petrolatum

Petrolatum is a mixture derived from processed petroleum. We choose not to use it because it may be unsustainably sourced and there is risk of possible PAHs (Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons) contamination in the body.

Petroleum-derived synthetic ingredients

Petroleum-derived synthetic ingredients are made by our friends in a lab. We choose not use them because they may be connected to unsustainable practices and may cause contamination in the body.

Phthalates

Phthalates are made by our friends at the lab. We choose not to use phthalates because they may be linked to hormone disruption.

Retinoic acid

Retinoic acid is made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use it because it is linked to a variety of skin problems including irritation, skin color changes, redness, swelling and sensitivity to sunlight

Retinol

Retinol is made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use it because it is linked to a variety of skin problems including irritation, skin color changes, redness, swelling and sensitivity to sunlight

Retinyl Acetate

Retinyl Acetate is made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use it because it is linked to causing skin irritation, reproductive toxicity and may have harmful effects on aquatic environments.

Retinyl Palmitate

Retinyl Palmitate is made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use it because it is linked to causing skin irritation, reproductive toxicity and may have harmful effects on aquatic environments.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate / Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLES/SLS)

Sodium Laureth Sulfate / Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLES/SLS) are surfactants made by our friends in a lab. We choose not to use them because they may be connected to overly drying out the skin.

Synthetic Dyes

Synthetic Dyes are made by our friends in a lab. With many pending studies and not enough information, we air on the side of caution and choose to formulate without them.

Synthetic Fragrances

Synthetic Fragrances are a combination of materials often added to mask or produce odor. We choose not to use any because of an overall lack of transparency about what they are made of.

Triclocarban
